In Memory of
Rev. Joseph Chomas
The Rev. Joseph Chomas, of Elizabeth Township, who performed acts of kindness as a layman and a minister, died on Tuesday, February 3, 2004.
Rev. Chomas, 94, worked as a pipe fitter at US Steel’s Clairton Works and later served as a Primitive Methodist minister at Merritt PM Church, Frank, PA.
Long before he received his calling to the ministry in 1967, Rev. Chomas spread his faith and kindness, often on the plant floor, said his daughter, the Rev. Barbara Minter, of Warrenton, Va.
He once helped an illiterate pipe fitter pass a test so he could get a pay raise. Another time, he prayed for an alcoholic co-worker to quit drinking – and the man did!
These were two of the many stories he like to tell, Minter said.
In the 1950s, Rev. Chomas started a radio evangelical program, “The Layman’s Hour”. “He put himself on,” Minter said. “He connected with a local radio station.”
Rev. Chomas served as president of the Blaine Hill Volunteer Fire Company in Elizabeth Township in the 1930s.
After he retired from the Clairton Works when he was 57, Rev. Chomas embarked on his second career – in the Primitive Methodist Church. He served at two churches in Rhode Island.
When his wife, Bertha, became ill, Rev. Chomas moved back to Pennsylvania and served at churches in Swissvale and in Uniontown, Fayette County.
When Rev. Chomas was serving at a mission in Guatemala, he used his carpentry skills to build commodes for the orphans. He established the Christian Layman’s Evangelical Association to raise money for children there.
Rev. Chomas also helped fund an endowed position in preaching at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky.
He was an honorary pastor of the Merritt Primitive Methodist Church in Buena Vista, Elizabeth Township.
Rev. Chomas was born November 7, 1909, to Michael and Veronica Chomas, both immigrants from Hungary. He outlived all of his nine siblings.
Besides his daughter, he is survived by three sons, Robert J. and James L., both of Elizabeth Township; and William E., of Myrtle Beach, SC; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Richard.

In Memory of
Nancy A. Barbera
Nancy, a beloved wife, mother , grandmother, friend and sister in Christ, went to be with our Lord July 11, 2003. She is now at peace and singing joyfully with many other old friends. Music, especially God’s music, was so very important to her. Listen – can you hear her?
Because of Isaiah 64:6 – “...all our righteous acts are like filthy rags...” her life changed on a Sunday in September 1972 – it was then in the Sutersville PM Chruch she dedicated her life to Christ. Always living her life by J.O.Y. (Jesus, Others, You).
Nancy’s life was an example of dedication to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her willingness to serve Jesus in any capacity was exemplified in her many years as the Sutersville Primitive Methodist delegate to Conference., Superintendent of our Sunday School, and as Secretary to our church. She also served as Pittsburgh District Missionary Society President and past Christian Education President. Being led by the Spirit of God, Nancy sought ways to get more people involved in doing God’s work, she loved all of God’s people. Nancy touched many lives, she was very active in the community and a friend to many. She always had a kind word. So many have received encouraging notes or calls from her. She always took advantage of every opportunity given to her to glorify God and point people in the direction of Jesus. It can be said, Nancy followed the Lord’s command in John 15:12, “That you love one another, as I have loved you.”
Throughout her 26 year battle with cancer, she knew the Lord was by her side, never giving her more than the could handle and giving him all the glory for seeing her through each day.
Nancy had written, “May I end my life like Paul – bonds of afliction abide me, but none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with JOY, and the ministry which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24.
Nancy is greatly missed and loved by her family and our congregation.
